Soulmist is a dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying game full of dark sorcery, corruption, madness, horror, and deadly peril. It uses 5e as a foundation and enhances it with a bevy of systems and rules to facilitate roleplaying in a dark fantasy setting.
In Soulmist, the players must contend with aberrant and horrific creatures and help forestall the world’s ruin. While this external battle persists, an internal one, just as furious, rages within the soul of each character.
This is the tug of Erebos, ever-present and relentless, pulling otherwise noble heroes into darkness.
Soulmist is not about the “ifs”, but the “whens”. When will the world plunge into the darkness that never ends? When will Erebos claim the souls of the stalwart and the brave? When will ruination spread to every corner of creation?
In most aspects, Soulmist uses the 5e system, with all that comes with that. Each character makes a set number of choices upon character creation: they select a race, a class, and a combination of background choices. They also set their ability scores, either by rolling or point-buy, which are the same as in 5e and similar games, complete with ability score modifiers, skill proficiencies, and the like.
Soulmist differs in a few ways from the base system, however. Instead of alignments, Soulmist has Erebos Level. This number goes from 0 to 9 and determines the extent to which the character’s soul has been tainted by Erebos.
Each character is also endowed with a Light-Spark, which they can expend to empower certain features or enhance their ability to do things. Creatures of the Darklands (likewise), have a Dark-Spark that is used in the same manner.
Lastly, the Scales of Nebula is a system that relates to the battle between Light and Dark. In a parallel struggle with the players’ own combat encounters, the Scales of Nebula will determine whether the land itself will be claimed by the Light or the Dark upon an encounter’s conclusion. As such, the heroes can have an active role in forestalling the spread of darkness – if they do actually manage to stop it.
A slew of other systems and rules, including a revamp to backgrounds, new skills, a humongous number of new feats, and all-new classes and subclasses, make up Soulmist.
The setting of Soulmist is Fyera, a world of our own creation, which teeters between light and darkness like an acrobat on a frayed rope. In Fyera, souls travel to the Nebula of Souls upon death. The Nebula – – also known as Soulmist – is invisible to the naked eye, but envelops the world. It is also what enables magic in Fyera; every spellcaster, no matter their vocation, draws upon the soul-sparks found within the Nebula to funnel their grim sorceries.
Fyera was, otherwise, a lush world full of color and life up until a thousand years ago, when a cataclysmic event sundered it, forever changing it. This Ruination, essentially, slowed down the planet’s rotation to such an extent that one side of the world is always enveloped by the sun’s light, while another is plunged in eternal darkness. These two vast realms are the Lands of the Old Days and the Darklands respectively. Between the two lies Penumbra, a thin stripe of land perpetually shrouded in dusky gloom.
